Any color you like Thursday January 26, 2006, 2 comments

I think its become American legend at this point, but it bears repeating. There was a time, way back when America was a leader in the automotive industry, in which a man named Henry Ford ran factories with such efficiency he forced the entire industry to follow suit. This man said you could have your car in any color you wanted, as long as it was black. Eventually other colors arrived, and more, other manufacturers beat Ford at its own game.

I spent the last two Rains complaining about the freshly elected government in Canada, but pay close attention. I said I was ashamed for my country. I never said anything about the government not being the one we chose. I also promise that this site isn’t going to become predominantly political.

Nonetheless, the preceding paragraphs are, in fact, related.

As you may have heard, Hamas, a militant and very anti-Israel and anti-American organization was elected overwhelmingly in Palestine. In addition to being the new government, they are also on the American list of terrorist organizations. International election observers called the election a “top notch operation” and gave their seal of approval to the entire process, meaning that Hamas was rightfully and honestly elected to represent the interests of Palestinians on the world stage.

The upshot is that America is striving to spread democracy throughout the world, at the cost of tens or hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars, but will only recognize the results of an election if their guy wins. The hypocrisy positively makes me itch.

Any party you want, as long as its ours.

This follows the idea that a popular vote is not intrinsically valid, due to the fact that even en masse people aren’t necessarily bright enough to know what’s good for them. I can see where the thought experiment with the 5 Nazis and a Jew in a car makes sense; but an entire people cannot so clearly be delineated as “evil” or “victims of evil”.

I’m curious to see what happens in the next few weeks in Palestine. It’s been reported that the success surprised no one more than the Hamas leadership themselves, such that, now with political power in their hands, they’re freshly out of any ideas about what to do with it.

When the nazi’s wanted to be legitimatized as a political party they were denied.
They never got on the ballot.

This is different.
If you are let to be in the election
how can you be disqualified for winning?

Commenting has ended for this post, but I'd still love to hear from you.
