“Yes, thank you. I look forward to hearing from you by the end of the week.”

He hung up the phone and sighed. How many times had he heard that? Ten? Twenty? Fifty? He wasn’t sure, but quite possibly more times than he’d seen a Ford commercial on television.

He looked into the mirror across the hall. Stared into the reflection of his eyes. The reflection stared back, asking a silent question.

Is anything more psychologically damaging than an extended job search?
