I don’t believe in astrology any more than I believe in heaven or Vespas, but I do find the whole concept really fascinating. The idea that the alignment of planets on the date of my birth (but not on the date of my conception?) can predict my personality is really interesting. Seriously flawed logic, perhaps, but interesting nonetheless.

Whoever said I believed the world was logical?

I’m a Pisces, born March 7, which puts me almost exactly in the center of the sign, chronologically speaking. A quick search of the ‘net assures me that Albert Einstein, George Washington, Chopin and George Harrison were also Pisces. It leads me to believe I’m in good company. It also leads me to some fantastic conclusions, namely that there’s no telling what sort of thing a Pisces is going to end up doing, be it lying, measuring, or doing drugs.

Fishie types are “psychic, the most spiritual sign of the Zodiac” according to several sources, which also note that Pisces are “empathetic and compassionate.” I can see all those traits in myself, though strangely I don’t see the words “cynical” or “right bastard” written anywhere in association with Pisces, traits I also associate with myself.

Pisceans are imaginative, emotional and responsive to rhythmical flow such as dance and music,” it says. This one I can buy. I’m a musical being by nature, and the fact that Chopin and George Harrison were also Pisces makes it verifiable, doesn’t it? Paul McCartney’s sign (Gemini) is irrelevant. Same with Mozart (Aquarius).

On the down side, Pisces are apparently “vague, deceptive, and prone to live in a fantasy world,” another way of saying “flakey.” I don’ t see this at all. I’m very specific about my deceptions and fantasy worlds. Piscean motto is “I believe,” and it’s true. I believe it’s probably all a load of horse’s doodie. These are all universal traits, not confined to those born in a specific 12th of the calendar year.

I guess the real issue with astrology is people who put their faith in it, treat it like a science. I’m not going to say that it’s without merit, because I can’t know that. But I can say that I refuse to let it govern how I act or feel. Because that’d be dumb, right?

For posterity (courtesy of yahoo! astrology):

Pisces (February 19 – March 20):
“Don’t even bother trying to contain your enthusiasm for your current situation. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being happy, and you’re entitled to express your feelings, no matter where you are. How much of this is due to a strict upbringing? Think about it. It’s not like you caused a public disturbance—in fact, you probably brought a smile to several faces. Your partner is right. Relax.”

I love cryptic.
